Helping Brisbane City Council celebrate Asian culture across Brisbane
Celebrating Asian culture, Brisbane City Council’s BrisAsia Festival includes diverse live entertainment, outdoor activity and healthy, active events across Brisbane city and suburbs.
The brief was to transform a shopping precinct; Aspley Central, into a fun and exotic Asian-inspired Bazaar for one night only. Installation time was very limited and décor concepts needed to be quicker-than-instant-noodles!
The concept of an Asian Bazaar conjures images of a place that’s busy, bustling, colourful and meandering - A place to explore and be surprised by new discoveries. The event décor needed to transform and open concrete space into smaller, intimate spaces.
Creating intimate space with lighting
Over 400mtr of festoon lights criss-crossed the sky, creating a temporary, glittery ceiling under which people could stand and watch performances on the main stage. Traditional red and gold Chinese lanterns and modern colour changing LED lanterns bristled from stage and out across the space leading spectators on to other spaces.
Using colour, cardboard and crates to activate the space
Simple cardboard packing boxes were stacked like Tetris to fill the space and provide a temporary surface for a Graffiti stencil Artist to decorate. Cardboard walls were utilised gently direct attendees from the carpark space, down an arcade to find an outdoor kitchen brimming with food vendors and cooking demonstrations.
Each food stall was styled with visual merchandising and a rainbow of ribbons and strings of origami cranes provided highlights. Huge two-storey-high milk crate sculptures towered over eating areas, providing attendees a point of reference within the event.
