What says ‘Christmas’ in a shop window display?

We learnt a thing or two about Christmas visual cues when we created an interactive Christmas window walk for businesses ranging from a Jeweller to a Thai restaurant in the Brisbane suburb of Gaythorne.

Shop Local Support Local

The Brits call it ‘the high street’- the row of shops, on a main thoroughfare that has an assortment of independent retailers. Rescuing these traditional shopping precincts was made famous by the TV series ‘Mary Queen of Shops’ and the sentiment is echoed here in Australia with the Shop Local trend. There are a number of tradtional ‘shopping strips’ dotted throughout greater Brisbane and as part of an activation program with Brisbane City Council’s Design Brisbane Team we were engaged to create a suite of Christmas window displays as a seasonal focal point for the suburb of Gaythorne.

Culturally appropriate visual displays that supports your brand statement

A Thai restaurant, homewares boutique, a tailor, a jeweller and a military collectibles store – the window displays needed to highlight the merchandise within each shop and acknowledge cultural diversity.

The Thai restaurant didn’t have an off-the-shelf product to highlight in a display and didn’t culturally align with a Christian Christmas tradition. Gold signifies wealth and stability for Thai people and in the Christian Christmas tradition, it was one of the gifts brought to Jesus by the three wise men. By using large gold leaves to decorate the restaurant window we created a cross-cultural display that was a talking point for patrons.

Across all of the 14 retailers we sourced and used recycled objects – tape measures and buttons from the tailor, toy soldiers and figurines from the collectibles store – to integrate the small business personal relationship and brand into the Christmas message.

 After dark window shopping

The installations remained in place for 3 weeks which gave local families plenty of time to come out at night and wander along the shop front to enjoy the light display and get involved in the excitement of Christmas.
